Archwood Exchange was founded in 2016 with the goal of creating a hub for black business in Phoenix, Arizona. The original vision was to open a store that only sold products made by black-owned companies. After a trip to Houston where we discovered the Houston Buy Black Marketplace, we decided to that a Buy Black Marketplace is what Phoenix needed.
We hosted our first Marketplace in May of 2016 and featured over 30 new and experienced black owned businesses. The Marketplace also quickly became a place to build community and learn about various resources and initiatives designed to benefit the community. The Marketplace is still held every first Saturday of the month in downtown Phoenix.
In April the opportunity presented itself again to open a store and we held our grand opening on April 13th. The store functions as a cooperative where business owners are able to sell their products in a brick and mortar environment without the high costs of overhead. It is group economics in action and we are excited to see where the journey takes us.
